Level Design

August 17th~~ For our final and few weeks leading up to our final project, we were to construct a 9 room level in UDK and take rendered Maya shots for our Game Design Document

July 25th~~
We were instructed to construct four rooms in Maya and light them properly.

July 11th, 2013~~
For our midterms we were instructed to construct the first five rooms of our narrowed down level design ideas which will be used in our final project.

July 2nd, 2013~~
For this assignment, we were instructed to create our first checklist following the process of game play and the seven elements of design. We were told to model a 2D level from this concept.

June 27th, 2013~~
For this assignment we were told to construct our ideas of an abstract level and a realistic level according to our book.

Abstract

June 13th, 2013~~
For this assignment we needed to come up with 5 originial level desgin ideas while thinking more like a desginer adn less like an artist.

1.) For my first idea I chose to design a level which combines the fun challenges of quizzes with the intensity of a maze. In this level, the character will navigate through a series of mazes. Each level will be a different maze, becoming more and more difficult as they progress through each level. There will be some mazes that will have a set time limit to complete the level. If that didn't make the game challenging enough, throughout nearly every maze there will be certain challenges to complete. The further through the maze you get, the more difficult the challenges will become.
The challenges will range from simple true false or multiple choice answers, word descrambling, riddles, and mini races. If you cannot complete the challenge, you will lose life points and be forced to go a different way. Also in the maze you will earn tokens as you progress through, whether it is answering a challenge question right, or by simply progressing through. The points can earn you a free passage through a challenge, extra lives at the end, or achievements. I think this game will be very fun in the fact that it challenges the players navigational and educational skills while still playing in a colorful and fun game.
2.) For my second level design idea, I chose to focus on a more adrenaline pumping game. In this game people will be able to ride a diet bike or 4-wheeler over colossal sized maps ranging in climate. There will be different nodes including where you can race in an arena or an outside track with other players online or against a computer. The freestyle mode will be where they can ride around vast terrains ranging from mountains, to prairies, and even desert wastelands. The goal of this mode is to do awesome tricks and jumps.
The jumps will be done by using the joystick and by pressing a combination of buttons on the controller (A, B, X, and Y for Xbox) By doing these stunts the player earns points(shown as money) which the player can redeem them at "The Shop" where they can buy new gear, bikes, and new parts for their vehicle. As the player completes the challenges more/better vehicles will be unlocked. Whenever a player overshoots a jump or doesn't land correctly, the player will fall off of the vehicle and lose a life, forcing the game to reset.
3.) For my third design idea, I chose to design a series of levels that challenges the brain in a fun way. The player will be taken through a variety of levels testing different areas of the brain. These challenges will include games such as descrambling words, matching games, word searches, and other puzzles. After completing each level the player will accumulate points to use as money in the "Prize Shop" in which they can buy tools for different levels, time bonuses, and customizations for their avatar.
This game can also be played against a bot or against other players online to expand the fun learning experience. This game is an ideal game for children of all ages. Parents will love this game and will even be able to play along with them and have a fun learning experience. Players will be able to expand their mind through their growing brain power all while having fun.
4.) For my fourth idea, I chose to design a level in which the player is in a square room and has to run around and gather building materials and weapons from the floor before the monsters come in. The player gathers these materials by walking over the materials which immediately go to the players "Bag" The player only has a certain amount of time per level to gather the materials before they all disappear and the monster(s) enter the room. At this time the player needs to begin constructing a wall/fortress to defend himself/herself from the invading monsters.
The player can also attack the monsters. The player only needs to survive in the room until the clock runs out. After it does, the level is complete and the player moveable on to the next room. The rooms will become more and more difficult as the game progresses until the player faces a boss fight at the end. At the end of every level the player accumulates "Warrior Points" in which they can use at the "Survival Shop" and can purchase items that they can carry with them through levels indefinitely.
5.) For my final idea, I chose to do a more culturally tasteful game. This game will revolve around puzzles and helping the brain grow. The levels will be comprised of different kinds of puzzles, including 3D puzzles, and rubix cube style puzzles. This game is for people of all ages to relax and take some leisurely time to themselves. When playing in a 3D puzzle level, the players will be able to alter the screen views by pressing the different buttons. The puzzles can also be timed or have no time limit.
Players will also be able to create their own puzzles by importing their own pictures to create them. I believe this game will be very relaxing, but competitive when played with other players online. I believe that parents will also love the creativity and learning principles of this game and will be able to play alongside with their children while strengthening their minds as well.
